RWJ health policy and health and society scholars--both accept non-quantitative people (who are interested in health, broadly-defined). And pay a huge salary. Super competitive to get, but so sweet if you do. Unfortunately, the deadline has passed for both programs for next fall--but think of it next year!

where do I find ads for postdocs? Seems like many aren't advertised in the ASA website.

I've found a few post-docs posted on higheredjobs.com, so that may be a good place to look. I also found a few by googling "postdoc" and "fellowship" along with things I do (like "gender" or "queer studies")

A lot of the top sociology programs provide job and post-doc announcements. I browse not only my dept's website, but I also search other depts for that info. It helps to go to the depts that specialize in what you do (i.e. family, demography, etc.)--they are interested in those areas and often know about opportunities. Once I find a helpful site, I bookmark it and check back every few weeks.

H-Net has a list:

Go to "Job Guide" at the top and then "browse jobs" on the left. They are under "fellowships/grants/interns" in the drop-down menu.

Postdoc: Migration among African Muslims--looks interesting:

POST-DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIP WITHIN THE INTERNATIONAL RESEARCH NETWORK

‘THE RELIGIOUS LIVES OF MIGRANTS’

WISER invites applications for a postdoctoral fellowship within the international research network on The Religious Lives of Migrants. The fellow will be required to work on the role of religious networks and ethics amongst African Muslims in South Africa. Prior research experience in the area of Islam and/or migration in Africa will be a strong recommendation. The successful applicant will be provided with a stipend, coverage of research costs in South Africa, institutional affiliation with WISER and funding for travel to three to four international seminars and conferences within the network.

WISER invites applications from candidates who hold PhDs in anthropology, sociology, religious studies or related disciplines, and who have substantial experience in carrying out independent ethnographic and empirical research.

The project seeks to explore the question of the role of religion in the lives and coping strategies of international migrants. The aim is to undertake detailed ethnographic research in a number of locations (including London, Kuala Lumpur and Johannesburg). The project includes a series of international workshops and conferences in the cities where the research is undertaken, as well as in New York from where the project is coordinated by the Social Science Research Council with support from the Ford Foundation.

The fellowship is for 18 months, but may be extended, dependent on future funding.

The fellow will conduct empirical research in South Africa (preferably in Johannesburg) in close collaboration with senior researchers at WISER, and Professor Thomas Blom Hansen (Professor of Anthropology at the University of Amsterdam).

Interviews for this fellowship will take place early in February.

The fellow should be available to start work within reasonably short time.

A detailed description of the international research network ‘The Religious Lives of Migrants’ as well as details of the research plans in South Africa within this network can be obtained from Professor Thomas Blom Hansen T.B.Hansen@uva.nl or

Thomas.Hansen@yale.edu

Applications should be emailed to Professor Jonathan Hyslop, Acting Director of WISER

hyslopj@wiser.wits.ac.za

with the words ‘Fellowship Application’ in the subject line.

Applications must include:

a. A covering letter, which should outline the candidate’s background and research interests

b. A full c.v.

c. The names and email contact details of three academic referees

d. A sample of the candidate’s academic work

Deadline for applications: 15 January 2007

Anonymous said...

P.S. WISER is the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg. FYI.

Thanks, everyone!

Cornell also maintains a database, at http://www.gradschool.cornell.
edu/?p=132

If the URL gets cut off, go to Google and type "Cornell fellowship" - it's the first thing that comes up. You can sort by type to get just the postdocs. There may be substantial overlap with the Berkeley list, but possibly a few different ones.

Mills, or anyone, does h-net have a listserve for new job postings? I couldn't find such a link, and maybe I just need to check back on and off, but a listserve would be supernice.

The UCLA Institute of Industrial Relations’ Postdoctoral Fellowship Program is designed to support a new generation of scholars engaged in research on issues of labor and employment. The program offers a unique opportunity for recent Ph.D.s to pursue research on labor and employment in an interdisciplinary setting. We will select two Postdoctoral Fellows for the 2007-08 academic year. IIR Postdoctoral Fellows will be selected on a competitive basis and awarded an annual stipend of $52,000 (plus benefits) together with $3,000 for research expenses. Fellows will be expected to teach a one-quarter undergraduate course while in residence and to participate in IIR colloquia and other public programs during the fellowship year. Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. degree from an accredited university between January 1, 2003 and June 30, 2007 to be considered for the 2007-08 fellowship year. Applications must be received by January 10, 2007. The final selection will be announced in April 2007. For further information and application forms, visit http://www.iir.ucla.edu/

There is a database at UCLA that you can search by discipline: http://www.gdnet.ucla.edu/asis/grapes/search.asp

Sometimes things listed are no longer offered even though the system shows an recent "updated on" date. For example, the SSRC International Migration fellowships are still listed and haven't been offered since 2002.

Mostly, though, it a useful way to look for leads.

The RWJ Health and Society postdoc program has chosen finalists and notified them. I believe the RWJ Policy program will choose finalists this week.

Anonymous said...

If you applied to both the Health and Society and Health Policy RWJ fellowships, don't despair about not hearing anything. They will let you know about interviews for either/both programs once the Health Policy program has made their decisions, which should be within the week. At that point you will have to make a decision about which program to interview with (i.e. in the case that you are a finalist for each).

Have the RWJ offers been announced yet?

Anonymous said...

RWJ Health Policy, yes; RWJ Health & Society, not yet--look for it early next week.

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know if RWJ notifies you via email, phone, or snail mail?

Anonymous said...

RWJ notifies by phone and snail mail.

Anonymous said...

If you get an offer from RWJ, you'll also get an email. This is for the Health & Society program.

Anonymous said...

health and society emails started going out today

Anonymous said...

Does anyone know which specific Health & Society sites people have gotten offers from? I've heard of Michigan and Harvard so far.

Anonymous said...

All the RWJ sites get offered at the same time, but they start with the double-matches (i.e. if sites ranked you in their top 3; and you ranked them #1). Then it filters down from there. The matching is all done at the foundation--the sites don't even know who has gotten the offers until after everyone has accepted.

Take this with a grain of salt, but it's my understanding of how it works.

Anonymous said...

The RWJ sites DO find out who has received offers before they have accepted.

Anonymous said...

Has anyone gotten a second-round offer yet (i.e., didn't hear on Monday but has heard today)? Or, for those with past experience with this, do you know how long after the first round a second round goes out?

Anonymous said...

I think the health policy folks have to decide by 5pm today. So I would imagine that second round offers will probably follow shortly thereafter.

Anonymous said...

It can take all week for the H&S RWJ offers to get out, or even longer. So don't give up hope!

Anonymous said...

Has anyone heard from the University of Minnesota Postdoc program yet?

Anonymous said...

Re: U Minnesota postdoc - I haven't heard anything yet.

Anonymous said...

Re: Minnesota post-doc. I haven't heard anything since the mass email in January.

Anonymous said...

On UMN postdoc: Just got an email saying they have not made selections due to illness of someone on the committee. I assume everyone got the same email?

Anonymous said...

I have a couple of questions about the UMN postdoc in case anyone has ideas.

1) Do you understand this to be a diversity fellowship in the sense of attempting to attract scholars of color, or are they looking for people of any race whose work focuses on diversity?

2) Does anyone know how many applicants are still under consideration?

Anonymous said...

Cornell's Contentious Politics postdoc search has made offers which were accepted.

Anonymous said...

RWJ health and Society Scholars has made all of their choices.

Anonymous said...

Anyone know about other postdocs? I applied to quite a few that closed around Feb. 1 at Michigan, Princeton, Duke, among others.
Thanks!

Anonymous said...

I just came across a humanities postdoc wiki:

http://wikihost.org/wikis/
academe/wiki/humanities_post-docs

While several of the postdocs are solely humanities oriented, a lot are multidisciplinary, and it seems to be updated fairly frequently. That's the bright side. The less bright side is that they don't seem to have much more information than we do.
