4/4 may be a killer for research. But, again it depends on you. Another very important thing is the number of preparations. 3 courses per semester with 3 preparations can be worse than four courses with two preparations.
About starting at a non-R1 school: There are many scholars who started in non-R1 places and worked their way up. But, it seems more than half stay in institutions similar to where they start.
What I've been told is that if you start your career at a non R1 school, it is "virtually impossible" to "move up." I've personally known people who have done this - but even they admit that it is pretty rare. Apparently, R1 schools start judging you on the basis of what you've produced in the amount of time you've been out. So if their expectation for their 3rd year t-t faculty would be 5 pubs., then they would judge you by the same standards - that is, if you've been out 3 years, they would expect that you have five pubs. The unfair and horrid part of this is that I've heard that if you're coming from a place that is higher ranked, they may let you have less pubs that what they would require from their own junior faculty. This whole system sucks!!
I was able to go from a doc 1 regional university to an R 1 during my third year. But I had five pubs placed well. Also, have been teaching a 2/3 load. I don't know how those teaching 4/4 do it but it is possible.
Re: starting your career at non-R1 Thanks. This was very helpful. I may turn down an offer from a small liberal arts college with heavy teaching load as I really see myself at an R1 in the future.
Just to weigh in on the R1/SLAC discussion, I don’t think starting at a smaller school automatically brands you in any permanent way. I think what is more important is your energy level/time commitments to your pub and grant records. You can have a 4/4 load and still research and publish, even if it is a crazy schedule. But I don’t think that being at a smaller school is a black mark.
For example, I just interviewed at a medium-sized urban public university that is not an R1. I was told that the line I was being considered for was a replacement for faculty who had gone on to top 10 schools. So it does happen.
I think the bottom line is if you are productive in publishing, conferences, grants, etc., it is possible to move up.
It's definitely "possible" to move up, there are several people who have done so. But that's like saying it is "possible" to land a job at a top 10 department while getting your degree from department number 25. Yes, it happens, but it happens very very rarely. The "problem" is that "moving up" is rare in academia while "moving down" is very common. More common are lateral moves, but it's obvious that that is not what the person wants. Nonetheless, it is "easier" to get a job when you have job than not and being at a SLAC for one or two years while publishing will not affect your chances to go for R1 either way. The tricky thing with this is that "if" you don't get a job, people in your department find out and it might not lead to good feelings.
I think the post by Sammy has it right: it really is all about how productive you are in respected outlets. If I can move up from a teaching place to an R 1 place, then that tells me that anyone who publishes a lot can do it as well. Don't sell yourself short. However, being really productive requires constant work and sometimes the it goes slower than you'd like.
As someone who's seen both the hiring side and the candidate side - way too many times - a caveat might help. Hiring, making offers, etc can get very bogged down institutionally....very quickly. It's tough for the candidate but you can't read much into the lag time between deadlines, short listings, campus visits, etc. If the wrong approval person (dean, provost, affirmative action) is on vacation, swamped, retiring, etc at the wrong time, hirings will be held up and there's not much the department can do to speed things along. It's hard to be the waiting candidate but the vagaries of this process are crazy-making. (Also, if it comes to it, and you're applying for visiting professorships, sometimes they end up being just what you need in order to wait out the market and get your perfect position the next year. Just use your temporary/temping time wisely & professionally.)
Michigan State is going to contact people this week about interviews for the quantitative position, which will start taking place as early as next week.
Has anyone heard from Fordham about campus visits? I did a phone interview with them in the beginning of January and am wondering if they have moved onto the next stage of interviewing. Also, has anyone heard anything other than "we're finally reviewing applications" from Queens College? I appreciate any information you can share.
Got the notice from Grinnell that the tenure-track position has been filled. Does anyone know about their 2-year replacement position? I know they're trying to contact people this week. Has anyone been contacted?
I heard that they brought candidate in for interviews at UIC but don't know if offers were made/accepted etc. All I know is that I haven't received a rejection letter from them yet.
Anybody has an update on whether the offer was accepted at Cal-Berkeley, Cal-Irvine, and CSU long island? Info on these schools have not been changed for a long time in the wiki...
if you mean csu long "beach" rather than "island", then I know the first offer was declined and they made a second offer. I don't think they'll make a third, but then again who knows.
Irvine made two offers which were declined in the last few days. I'm not sure whether they are now making offers to their next down on the list or are planning to invite others. Anyone know?
Re: Toledo-I just found my rejection letter from Toledo, dated 12/19, which states, "We have completed the screening process and have chosen another candidate whose qualifications are more closely suited for this position." This may not be much help, though.
Just an FYI to those still hoping for jobs. A friend who had begun to lose hope just received a request for more documents from a school she applied to - so don't count yourselves out yet! There are a lot of places still perusing applications and compiling short lists.
Re: UCs. Davis has reopened its search for a soc historical person to the long short list. Irvine might reopen, since 2 of their offers got declined. Berkeley has invited 4 people for the gender position (if you really need names, go to their colloquia webpage)
Did anyone who applied for the position at Pacific Lutheran University (Tacoma) ever hear anything from the department? Did they conduct interviews in the fall?
Claude--Thanks for the glimmer of hope!! I'm still waiting on a few schools not posted on wiki yet and haven't made decisions, but my spirits are pretty low. I've got this pile of rejections and the options just keep narrowing as I keep checking the wiki list. But I do think there are also going to be 2nd rounds of interviews for the failed searches (some of which are already happening and have not been updated on the wiki) in addition to the schools that just have not yet invited candidates. I know hope is out there, but it is brutal!!
Anyone have an update on the U Tenn position (joint with African Studies)? The wiki says the offer has been made; I was just wondering if it has been accepted or declined yet. Thanks!
I got a rejection letter today from Stanford for the International Studies/Sociology position. I had totally forgotten about sending out that application, so it's actually a good thing I didn't get called for an interview. Anyway, just out of curiosity, does anyone have more information about that search? Are they inviting candidates for job talks or have they decided not to pursue it (it wasn't clear from the letter).
Got an email from Queens yesterday (was sent to about 17 others) that said their search is still ongoing, they will be deciding in the next few weeks, and they will be setting up interviews in the next few days.
Anybody know what's the story behind this search? Did they already interview candidates and this is round 2?
Yup, got the same letter. It was pretty nice, by the standards of such letters. The line about how you might be a better fit for future job openings gives you a speck of hope...
Kutztown (PA) is now advertising for a VAP for the upcoming year for what looks like the same position as their advertised TT position. Did they not hire anyone after all - lose funding or not find a "suitable" candidate?
Usually they will start in July or even late June. Look for a bunch to come out in August.
Make sure you have your CV posted on your department's "on the market" website--our department is trolling those pages looking for candidates to interview unofficially at ASA.
It will be my first time on the job market this Fall. I am already starting to get nervous/excited/anxious about the whole process and it is only early June! Is anyone out there obsessively checking out the wiki-soc/ASA boards on a daily basis like me?
Here's the link to the employment service. Most folks in my dept have told me this service doesn't usually result for much. But I'm at a top 10 and don't want (can't get) an R1 job. So I figured I'd give it a try. Esp since I'm going to ASA's anyway...
11:04: I'm curious about why you believe you "can't get" an R1 coming from a top 10 school. Am I misunderstanding you? If you're coming from a top-ranked department, I would assume your pedigree would work to your advantage!
Not wanting an R1 job is another (understandable) issue.
I was on the market tentatively last fall and tried the ASA employment service. I was not all that impressed with the selection of schools participating, but it was definitely a good opportunity to practice talking about my research. I won't be doing it again, but I recommend it for first-timers!
I’ve heard that the ASA bulletin is especially good for people who are interested in second-tier research universities and/or smaller teaching schools. I think it is true that the big R1 schools tend to bypass the ASA but there are a lot of good schools that use it too. Last year, a few jobseekers from my R1 top 10 school did it and they interviewed with good places like Minnesota, UMass-Amherst and several good state schools.
I’ve also been told that ASA is a good place to meet up with faculty at schools you are interested in, especially since many of them will be there anyways for the meeting. I’ve emailed a few people and set up meeting to “talk about my/their research” or “to talk about potential job/post-doc openings at their school.” You’ll get non-responses but some email back. I say, it can’t hurt to try….
I'm not sure if being from a top 10 place ensures an R1 job.
I'm sure it does offer candidates some unearned privilege, but I don't really do the stuff that makes top 10 schools top 10 (i.e. I don't do quant stuff).
We've got some rock stars here, so I find it hard to believe my one pub is going to impress anyone compared to them.
Anyway, its a moot point because I'm aiming for a SLAC and I'm not dragging my partner across the country to a place where we don't want to live. I honestly don't know what my chances are. Folks here don't often go that route so advice is hard to come by.
I do find it ironic, however, that a discipline that spends so much time researching inequality can't figure out a merit based hiring scheme.
Ironic yes, but then again, if you left each institution to define "merit" you'd probably end up with the same highly subjective system.
At any rate, being at a top 10 school, with a publication is a significantly better postion that most of the rest of the people. Since you're going for a SLAC, if you have teaching experience and a personality, you should do very well on the market.
I knew someone from our top 10 program who got a job at a top 15 with one co-authored publication in a edited book, (but they were a quant. soc. person) so you don't need to be in AJC to get a good job.
I don't think there is a simple formula for this, publications will help, being at a top ranked school will help, but it seems like that is more related to getting to the short list. Once you have a campus visit, all bets are off, and at that point it could be anything that gets you hired or not...
On average, how many schools do people generally apply to. I know that it probably depends on a lot of factors--institutional prestige of origin, institutional prestige of destination, strength of candidate, field of study, etc. But what's a good ballpark?
My adviser suggested that I apply to around 15. That seems incredibly few to me. Yes, I'd like a good job but at the end of the day, I prefer not to be unemployed! I say 30-35 is a good start, but I don't know. The job market is so unpredictable and I think it is better to be safe than, well, unemployed!

Anyone heard from Brown regarding the urban sociology position (the one that wasn't joint with am civ)? Thanks.
did unc-wilmington schedule interviews?
anybody heard anything from Cal State-LA?
i know of an interview scheduled for the public soc position at unc-wilmington
On CSULA;
I have not heard from them yet either. Of course I am curious as to where the search is now...
Re: starting your career at non-R1
Thanks. This was very helpful. I may turn down an offer from a small liberal arts college with heavy teaching load as I really see myself at an R1 in the future.
Any info on the Kutztown (PA) job? It seemed they had a VAP who specialized in what they did, someone who's now listed as an asst prof.
What's a VAP?
I think VAP stands for Visiting Assistant Prof. :-)

Any news on the N.C. State environmental sociology search?
Has anybody heard further news about the Michgan State University Quant position? Have they decided the "short" short list?
Michigan State is going to contact people this week about interviews for the quantitative position, which will start taking place as early as next week.

fordham has scheduled interviews. i'm sorry.
Thanks for posting the information about the Fordham interviews. Sucks to not be among the interviewed but better to know.
Got the notice from Grinnell that the tenure-track position has been filled. Does anyone know about their 2-year replacement position? I know they're trying to contact people this week. Has anyone been contacted?
I'm wondering if anyone has information about University of Central Florida or about William Paterson University.
Does anybody know what is happening with Farleigh Dickinson U?
Fairleigh Dickinson has conducted phone interviews and is currently scheduling campus visits.
Re: FD Thanks. Good to know.
Lehman has had on-campus interviews
any word on Webster U?
Madison's economic cluster search has sent rejection letters. Does anyone know the status of their other, open Soc search?
Re: Grinnell 2-year position
Phone interviews are scheduled for Feb 1st and 2nd.
Queens College CUNY is setting up phone interviews, and will do on-campus almost immediately after that. Rumored to have over 170 applications.
Does anyone know the status of Minnesota's two senior searches?
I know that Madison is in the process of interviewing right now for their open search. Does anyone know if they've sent rejection letters yet?
Whatever happened with UC Berkeley's gender search (deadline was Dec. 1)? Did they make an offer to anyone?
re: Berkeley's gender hire. They are working on finalizing a short list.
Yes, does anyone know the status of the William Paterson jobs? Esp. the crim/social statistics one?
Any news on the N.C. State environmental sociology search?
Does anyone know if Texas Tech has invited candidates for campus visits yet?
Anyone know what the latest is for the urban/org search at U. of Illinois at Chicago?
I heard that they brought candidate in for interviews at UIC but don't know if offers were made/accepted etc. All I know is that I haven't received a rejection letter from them yet.
Anyone hear anything about Indiana East or Salem College (not to be confused with Salem State)?
FYI: Mills College sent an email this week saying that they would be finalizing their short list in the next couple of weeks. :)
Anyone know what's going on at Colby and Middlebury?
I believe middlebury has made an offer, and it was accepted.
Long Beach's offer - I guess its second - has been accepted.
Anyone heard from Baker U. (Baldwin City, KS) or an update on Maryville College (they had phone interviews a couple weeks back)?
Irvine made two offers which were declined in the last few days. I'm not sure whether they are now making offers to their next down on the list or are planning to invite others. Anyone know?
Maryville has extended at least one campus invitation.
Thank you all for updating the status at Long Beach and Irvine. Anyone knows about the status at Cal Berkeley?
Can anyone provide any info on U of Toledo search?
Any news on the N.C. State environmental sociology search?
Any news on the Global Markets and the Environment job at Michigan State?
Re: Toledo-I just found my rejection letter from Toledo, dated 12/19, which states, "We have completed the screening process and have chosen another candidate whose qualifications are more closely suited for this position." This may not be much help, though.
Toledo-
Appreciate the info. I have not received a rejection letter yet, but have not had any contact from them either...so just wondering...
Any news on the Pomona College Sociology/Media Studies Search?
Baker University has interviewed three candidates and has made an offer.
Has anyone heard new news about the Brown interviews?
Does anyone know what's going on with the U. of Vermont?
Vermont has made an offer in the second of its three searches, and the offer from the first search was accepted.

Has anybody heard anything about the VA Commonwealth searches? They had advertised 2 positions, but have never appeared on the wiki.
Were they both failed searches?
Re: VA Commonwealth. The Soc search in the Wilder School has completed the 1st round of phone interviews.
Any more word from Mills College (did their shortlist materialize?)?
I received an Affirmative Action card from Pacific Lutheran just a week or so ago. It amazed me given that their deadline was very early on (I think).
North Florida canceled their search.
Good luck to everyone!
Kyle
fI received an affirmative action card from PLU in early October. Haven't heard a thing since. Maybe the search was delayed. Happens.
Anyone have an update on the U Tenn position (joint with African Studies)? The wiki says the offer has been made; I was just wondering if it has been accepted or declined yet. Thanks!
American U. has closed their junior TT search with no hire.
Kutztown (PA) has called the folks on their short-list and is planning to have them fly out in the next week or two.
The offer for Brown's built environment position is made or immanent.
Make that imminent. Hmmm... maybe that's why I didn't get it. :)
The Urban position at DePaul University has been filled
Does anyone know why American U closed its search without hiring anyone?
Received a rejection letter from Queens College today
Does anybody know anything about Farleigh Dickinson reopening their search?
Pomona Soc/Media Studies search has been cancelled
Got an email from Queens yesterday (was sent to about 17 others) that said their search is still ongoing, they will be deciding in the next few weeks, and they will be setting up interviews in the next few days.
Anybody know what's the story behind this search? Did they already interview candidates and this is round 2?
Got a rejection letter from Barnard today and a letter that American U closed it's search.
any posts re: manhattan college?
new york tech? bard visiting? mellon postdoc upenn?
Does anyone know the status of the senior searches at Minnesota?
Thanks.
UCIrvine rejection letter 3/27
Yup, got the same letter. It was pretty nice, by the standards of such letters. The line about how you might be a better fit for future job openings gives you a speck of hope...
Anyone have an update on the UC Berkeley gender search (for the senior position). The job talks were a month ago. Have they made an offer?
Kutztown (PA) is now advertising for a VAP for the upcoming year for what looks like the same position as their advertised TT position. Did they not hire anyone after all - lose funding or not find a "suitable" candidate?
Has anyone heard news about searches at Baruch CUNY, Manhattan College, or New York City College of Technology?
At Baruch they have hired; don't know about the others...
When should the Fall 2008 job postings start rolling out? (it's my first time on the market).
Usually they will start in July or even late June. Look for a bunch to come out in August.
Make sure you have your CV posted on your department's "on the market" website--our department is trolling those pages looking for candidates to interview unofficially at ASA.
Thanks for the advice... Just sent my CV to the placement committee chair.
Is there going to be a new version of this website or just a new section for 2007-08?
Jobs going up on the ASA employment service site right now...
It will be my first time on the job market this Fall. I am already starting to get nervous/excited/anxious about the whole process and it is only early June! Is anyone out there obsessively checking out the wiki-soc/ASA boards on a daily basis like me?
June 13,
I'm right there with you. I just read through the _entire_ thread of this blog's predecessor... looking for any advice.
I posted an "I'm interested" on the ASA employment service and have been checking back every 5 minutes to see if they've responded.
If you can get more anxious/nervous/paranoid than that, good luck.
Hi socgrad,
I didn't know about the employment services--oh no, another thing to obsessively check!
So glad that you posted. It is good to know that I'm not the only one out there obsessing. Good luck to both of us! We'll get through this!
Here's the link to the employment service. Most folks in my dept have told me this service doesn't usually result for much. But I'm at a top 10 and don't want (can't get) an R1 job. So I figured I'd give it a try. Esp since I'm going to ASA's anyway...
http://jobbank.asanet.org/emp_service/index.cfm
Good luck to us all!

12:20,
I'm not sure if being from a top 10 place ensures an R1 job.
Oops, meant AJS...
2:37,
I wish I shared your optimism. But thank you for the kind words.
As for the jobs rolling out. How many TT jobs were posted last year? It's hard to tell from the wiki because some aren't posted.
Does anyone have a breakdown of how many R1 jobs, mid tier jobs, SLAC jobs were posted?
I've set up the 2007-2008 sociology rumor mill blog.
http://socrumormil2007.blogspot.com/
How do I publicize this?
Thanks for setting up the new blog Alba. If you haven't already, post the link on the wiki.
I realized that there is a misspelling in the original URL. Here is the new link:
